Technology Top 100 Awards

By admin, 17 listopada, 2012, No Comment

This year’s Technology Top 100 award programme (TT100) will be taking place at the Vodacom Dome in Midrand on November 28, with a keynote speech by Department of Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom. The awards will be followed by a Strategic Networking Executive Cocktail event where the finalists will have a chance to further establish their networks.  South Africans are some of the most innovative developers of technology in the world – and this is what the Technology Top 100 (TT100) award programme celebrates every year. But more than just celebrating the success of South African technological innovation, the TT100 looks to encourage a culture of technological innovation and excellence in South African companies.

Launched in 1991 by the South African Engineering Association to draw attention to the importance of developing such a culture, the TT100 has evolved into one of the top business awards programmes and recognised as the Premier Business Excellence Awards in South Africa. As the showcase of technological excellence in the country, the TT100 highlights South Africa’s top technology organisations as role models to inspire fellow South Africans to emulate their achievements and in so doing it is driving growth and innovation advancement in our country.

The TT100 has enjoyed strong government endorsement since 1994, with the Department of Science and Technology emerging as the main sponsor of the awards. It renewed its commitment in 2005, and the Minister issued an official mandate to utilise the TT100 to further develop technology and innovation in South Africa by promoting South Africa’s role models for the Management of Technology and Innovation.

This partnership with the Department of Science and Technology allows the TT100 to open up significant networking channels and opportunities for all of the innovators involved. Significant private sector sponsorship has also been secured since 1997, which means that the programme holds a unique opportunity for public and private sector partnerships.

Because TT100 strives to both identify new technologies and to promote them to potential funders, it’s important to also partner with organisations that are able to walk the road with these innovators from the beginning. One such partnership is with Eskom and Industrial Development Corporation, the sponsor of the Emerging TT100 Enterprises section of the awards.

The awards seek to bridge the technology divide by promoting the emergence of black-owned technologically innovative organisations by identifying such enterprises and highlighting their achievements, and promoting the involvement of women in technologically innovative enterprises.

The Emerging Enterprises section that has seen the fastest growth since the TT100 initiated a major focus on the SME sector in 2001. This was done at the request of former President Thabo Mbeki, in line with national efforts to raise the profile of the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, and to foster the emergence of new technology enterprises – with a very enthusiastic response from the SMEs.

The adjudication panel for TT100 is an independent and high-profile body drawn from top people in the business and public sectors of South Africa, ensuring transparency and consistency. They will be in charge of judging all the enterprises – not only on the basis of technological sophistication, but also on a set of broader criteria. These include issues such as social and environmental responsibility, as well as national priorities such as black economic empowerment, job creation and skills development. Above all, organisations should demonstrate exactly how they have commercialised an innovative process for sustainable benefit for their stakeholders.

Categories across the Emerging and Established sectors include awards for Excellence in the Management of Research, Technology, Innovation, People and Systems. The Director-General’s Award for Overall Excellence in Emerging Enterprises, the Minister’s Award for Overall Excellence in Established Enterprises, the Minister’s Award for Sustainability.

As South Africa’s benchmark of business excellence, the TT100 is raising awareness of the critical need for our companies to embrace the management of technology, innovation and people in a sustainable manner. It offers companies the opportunity to measure their achievements against the best in the country and to showcase their exciting technological initiatives to the nation, regardless of the industries they operate in.

Publishers Australia members to benefit from deep data insights

The Australian magazine publishing sector is poised to take a leap forward in digital audience measurement following a strategic partnership between Publishers Australia and Effective Measure.

Effective Measure is an Australian founded and developed online data measurement specialist providing audience profiling and rich data to premium publishers, ad agencies, ad networks, advertisers and researchers.

Publishers Australia and Effective Measure announced their new partnership at the 2nd Annual Magazine Week conference in Sydney today.

Under the alliance, Effective Measure will offer all existing and new Publishers Australia members with complimentary tagging of their websites. This is extended to all publishers’ networks that deliver under four million page views per month.

“Digital measurement is becoming increasingly important to our members as digital media consumption escalates across new platforms and mobile devices. The alliance with Effective Measure will give our members the tools and data to take on the digital shift with greater ease and in a huge scale,” said Publishers Australia CEO Matthew Green.

Across 12 months, Effective Measure will run surveys on their sites which will give Australian publishers rich insights into their audiences. Publishers will have 24/7 access to this data on their own dedicated dashboards, which will empower their negotiations and visibility with media agencies, advertisers and research organisations.

“Being part of the Effective Measure platform empower Australian publishers to take control of their own audience data and use it in sophisticated ways to increase commercial opportunities and enhance editorial engagement. It is the perfect way to maximise their digital assets,” said Effective Measure MD Australia & New Zealand, Ben Sharp.

The Australian Effective Measure platform already profiles over 150,000 online users. Australian publishers that already enjoy the benefits of Effective Measure’s solution include Private Media, Australian Independent Business Media, Haymarket, IDG Network Ten, Sporting Pulse and REA.

“This alliance will help publishers of all sizes and stages in their digital development reap the benefits of high-end measurement and sophisticated data that their larger counterparts already leverage to extend commercial opportunities,” Effective Measure CEO Richard Webb said.

Publishers Australia and Effective Measure will hold information sessions in early 2013 to assist in rolling out the platform to publishers. More details will follow from Publishers Australia.

The paramount issue of online auditing was examined today, on Day 2 of the Magazine Week conference in the session, ‘Online Auditing – Does it still carry weight?’.

The panel which included Effective Measure CEO – Richard Webb, Circulations Audit Bureau CEO – Paul Doves, The Business Spectator GM – Nicholas Gary, Edentify Managing Partner David Gaines and Nielsen MD Media Group – Matt Bruce, canvassed the issues of data overload and how to use it effectively and with demonstrable ROI.

“Audiences are best served when we understand them more thoroughly. Publishers need a comprehensive view that allows behavioural data to be overlaid with deeper insights into the profile of the user, which is the approach we take at Effective Measure. We have been driving innovation in emerging markets around the globe and are in a perfect position, to now bring that vision and insight into the local market, to help empower the Australian publishing sector,” Webb said.

Dell Updates Fluid Data Architecture

By admin, 15 listopada, 2012, No Comment
  •  New Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.3 can increase performance up to 100 percent over previous versions when running enterprise workloads1 and can double bandwidth as the first storage array featuring end-to-end 16Gb Fibre Channel from server to switch to storage
  •  New Dell PowerVault MD3 array software offers enhanced data protection, capacity utilisation, and virtualization capabilities in an affordable, high performance solution
  •  Dell data protection portfolio bolstered by new solutions, including the Dell PowerVault DL4000, providing feature-rich AppAssure software optimised in a 1U backup appliance

At its second EMEA Dell Storage Forum customer and partner event, Dell today unveiled a series of end-to-end storage portfolio updates designed to advance the Fluid Data architecture and to help customers further optimise data at every point in its lifecycle.

“The nature of IT and what a data centre should do for an organisation is changing rapidly as customers face multiple and often competing models of how technology is delivered — from client to cloud to converged,” said Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager, Dell Storage. “Dell is best positioned with an end-to-end storage architecture that can optimise data at every point in its lifecycle through intelligence and automation. Dell’s Fluid Data Architecture enables new capabilities that power the data center, so customers can drive real business results.”

New Dell Compellent and PowerVault MD3 Software Increases Performance and Automation

Dell Compellent Storage Center 6.3 array software unveiled today offers enhanced scalability and performance for Dell Compellent arrays. Compellent SC8000 controllers with Storage Center 6.3 software can increase performance up to 100 percent over previous versions when running enterprise workloads. Additionally, with this release, Dell is the first storage provider to announce end-to-end 16Gb Fibre Channel capability — from server to switch to storage — doubling bandwidth and speeding access to business critical applications and data.

Designed for medium to large enterprises and cloud computing, Dell Compellent arrays offer best in class automated tiering, advanced data protection and superior ease of use. These features combine with a highly scalable, modular design that enables users to update storage software at no additional cost and easily expand without requiring a “rip and replace” of their existing infrastructure. According to a new IDC White Paper, commissioned by Dell, Compellent installations had almost twice as long a productive life span than non-Dell storage solutions with organisations replacing Compellent every 6.9 years compared to 3.5 years for their other storage environments.

Additional enterprise enhancements from Storage Center 6.3 announced today include:

  •  Synchronous replication enhancements that can improve resiliency for data recovery and provide multi-site replication flexibility designed to reduce recovery time and recovery point objectives;
  •  Expanded Microsoft integration with new Windows Server 2012 support;
  •  Enhanced security and reduced administration time with Active Directory and LDAP support that automates and integrates Compellent storage with a corporate directory to enable a single authentication and authorisation process for granting access;
  •  Improved federal government security by supporting USGv6/IPv6 requirements for a wide range of available IP addresses; and,
  •  The ability to intelligently alert and recommend placement of volumes across multiple arrays based on proactive performance and capacity monitoring.

New Dell PowerVault MD3 software enhancements offer enhanced data protection, performance, capacity and virtualization capabilities while designed to maintain up to 99.999 percent availability for these affordable, high performance arrays.

Data protection enhancements include dynamic disk pools that simplify disk management and improve rebuild performance by distributing data across all drives, decreasing significant recovery time of drive failures. In addition to current Fibre Channel replication capabilities, new IP-based remote asynchronous replication protects against site failures, improves application speeds, and increases distance support.

New PowerVault MD3 software application integration and efficiency capabilities include VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) support, which allows customers to offload certain storage related tasks from the server to PowerVault arrays. New thin provisioning capabilities enable arrays to automatically allocate storage as needed for simplified and cost-effective expansion of capacity.

Dell Boosts Data Protection Portfolio to Simplify Data Backup and Recovery

Dell’s growing data protection portfolio enables customers of all sizes to attain unmatched data and application protection and recovery capability times for virtual, physical and cloud environments. Dell provides complete backup, replication and recovery solutions designed to maximise data efficiency, improve IT agility and help ensure business resiliency. Additions to the Dell data protection portfolio include:

  •  Dell PowerVault DL4000 — Optimised for small to medium enterprises and remote offices, the first backup appliance based on Dell AppAssure software provides a fast and complete backup and disaster recovery solution for business-critical applications and data with seamless integration of software and system management. The software enables mid- to large-sized organizations to simplify data protection while protecting critical applications in physical and virtual heterogeneous environments. NetVault’s cross-platform capabilities are expanded to Windows Server 2012 and Novell Open Enterprise Server 11, while Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and VMware vSphere® enhancements offer improved functionality, performance and scalability. The addition of native replication to the NetVault SmartDisk deduplication solution helps streamline offsite data storage and disaster recovery.
  •  Dell PowerVault DL2300 — New enterprise-class data protection appliance combines Dell PowerEdge 12th generation servers with CommVault Simpana 9 modern data protection software to offer large enterprises with data backup, recovery, replication, archiving and de-duplication for both physical and virtual servers in one easy-to-set-up, pre-tested solution. The new appliance incorporates latest generation processor and memory capabilities to optimise de-duplication database configurations for higher backup performance. Users can save administrative time with built-in, policy-based automation for managing backup and archiving.

Additional Quotes:

“Dell Compellent storage plays a critical role in our IT infrastructure, and we continue to look forward to new enhancements and features that help us meet enterprise level storage demands,” said Dan Marbes, Lead Systems Engineer, Associated Bank. “The opportunity to gain up to two times the performance when running our applications means faster access to important information when our users need it. We are also eagerly anticipating the integration of Active Directory authentication to more efficiently manage access to these resources.”

“We’ve relied on AppAssure for recovery and peace of mind for years on a variety of storage platforms,” said Michael Rapp, information security officer, Center for Information Technology in Education, College of Education, University of Houston. “Dell’s integration of this data protection software into a purpose-built platform could make it even easier for customers to deploy an AppAssure-optimised solution with a minimal amount of set up and configuration work.”

First All-LTE Network in Africa Announces Commercial Roll-Out

By admin, 15 listopada, 2012, No Comment

Statement by Mr. Tom Allen, COO of Smile Telecoms , at AfricaCom 2012, CTICC, Cape Town, South Africa.

Smile Telecoms is proud to announce the extension, this week, of its partnership agreement with Alcatel-Lucent, to serve as Smile’s sole LTE network provider in its markets in Tanzania, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Alcatel-Lucent will provide comprehensive Design, Build and Operate services for Smile’s nationwide LTE networks as part of a planned 5-year partnership to bring true fixed and mobile broadband services to Africa.

Daniel Jaeger, Vice-President of Alcatel-Lucent in Africa, said: “We are very pleased to partner with Smile to extend their 4G LTE services in Africa. With the delivery of new in-demand services, Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE solution will allow Smile to grow their business and, at the same time, develop mobile broadband further in this economically burgeoning region.”

Earlier this year, Smile became the first network and services operator to deploy a true commercial 800 Mhz LTE network in Africa. Our networks in Tanzania and Uganda have out-performed our initial expectations: Our customers have experienced speeds well in excess of what can be obtained from other operators, and we have seen consistently stellar satisfaction levels.

We have proven the technology, we’ve tested the business model, we’ve tested market demand and consumer experience, we’ve tested our partnership, and we’ve tested our commercial deployment strategy. Based on our results, the time has come to shift from testing to doing. Smile will be in a position to roll out nationwide coverage of full 800 MHz LTE services in all three of our markets within 3 years.

Working together, we will launch full geographic and service coverage in Dar Es Salaam and Kampala before the end of Q1 2013, with near-national coverage in both markets as early as 2014.

Our services will include ADSL-type connectivity for businesses and homes, as well as full Mobile Broadband, at speeds up to 20Mbs. The speed, quality and reliability of these services will allow our customers to experience the full benefits of LTE, including real-time video streaming without buffering, video calls which live up to their promise and a reliable platform for health, commerce and education services. Smile will provide both wholesale and retail services in all of our markets.

Today’s announcement occurs in the broader context of Smile’s strategic vision, which is to provide affordable, high-quality and easy-to-use broadband access and communication services to everyone across Africa. We will accomplish this by combining our innovative business model with the latest technologies, and working with industry-leading partners such as Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson.

We believe that the long-term social and economic impact of mobile broadband in Africa has only begun to emerge, and will continue to transform our Continent. We expect particularly strong demand growth for data services – most of it driven by mobile broadband.
Smile is uniquely placed to meet this burgeoning demand: We have the required spectrum allocation, and we are not limited by legacy infrastructure, legacy-related costs or outdated business models.
Based on our market experience, we believe that initial product uptake will be particularly high amongst existing internet users looking for higher quality, faster speeds and greater reliability than is available from the market. However, as prices for devices and smart phones begin to tumble, we will offer true mobile broadband that is not only better than anything else on the market, but also more affordable.

Smile believes that broadband access will transform Africa beyond all recognition, and that our 800 MHz LTE offering will similarly transform broadband. Smile is ready to lead this transformation. We’re focused on LTE, we know how to make it work, and we’re ready to roll out.
