Absa In-Store Banking transactions exceed R8 Million

In excess of R8 million worth of transactions were recorded since the launch of Absa’s In-store banking facility, a clear sign that the payment medium has gained traction in promoting financial inclusion. 

Since launching its In-store banking facility in 2011, Financial Services group, Absa, has seen over R8 million in transactions recorded over point-of-sale devices at several of its existing merchant retail stores.

This is according to Arrie Rautenbach, Absa Head of Retail Markets who adds that In-store banking has processed more than 50 000 transactions since January 2012.

Driven by the quest to provide comprehensive banking services outside of the bank’s traditional branches, Absa’s In-store banking facility affords Absa customers the ability to transact at selected merchant retail stores, to withdraw from or deposit money into their accounts, purchase air-time, obtain mini-statements and check balances at point-of-sale machines.

The innovation has been identified by Absa as a key tool to achieve the goal of financial inclusion through branchless banking, while creating foot-flow and additional revenue streams for retailers.

“As the leading Bank in South Africa, Absa not only endeavours to be at the cutting edge in terms of providing financial services, but we are also cognisant of our broader responsibility in facilitating the inclusiveness of the large numbers of previously unbanked and under-banked South Africans,” says Rautenbach.

He adds: “This channel has brought about obvious payment convenience to our customers who are now able to perform basic banking transactions at their local shop at reduced rates. Reaching the R8 million transactional benchmark is reflective of the facility’s success in providing easier and cheaper options that will contribute towards bringing this sector of the market into formal banking.”

As of the end of August 2012, there had already been more than a thousand Absa In-store banking facilities deployed across South Africa. The service was enhanced to offer new functionality over and above normal purchases to include basic banking transactions.

“By capitalising on our extensive retail footprint, we were able to extend our In-store banking facility to many of our existing retailers countrywide, thereby ensuring maximum reach and accessibility to a larger customer base. We aim to attract a large percentage of the unbanked and under-banked market, while expanding the scope of transactional platforms for our existing customers,” says Rautenbach.

Absa has also revolutionised the way financial services reach unbanked and under-banked populations. Since the inception of the bank’s Remote Account Opening Application over 40 000 accounts have been opened making banking more accessible, especially to those who previously had no access to banking.

Absa currently holds the largest number of cellphone banking customers with approximately 3,9 million registered users. The bank maintains its position as the largest retail bank in South Africa in terms of customer numbers, with a growing base of seven million entry level clients.

“These numbers underscore the importance of the work Absa is doing in developing access to formal financial services to a large unbanked population, spread across the country. Our milestones provide for a bright future in making affordable banking accessible to all,” concludes Rautenbach.

Kaspersky Lab’s number of the week: 69% of users prefer not to pay to keep their data safe

Most PC and laptop owners want to keep their digital data safe and sound – in the modern world losing this information means losing a part of one’s personal identity. In fact, figures from a survey conducted for Kaspersky Lab by O+K research in May 2012 confirm just how important security is. According to the survey, 95% of desktop computers and 92% of laptop worldwide are protected from malware and other threats in one way or another. The question is how effective these security solutions are– and therein lies the problem. According to the survey, 69% of users did not pay for the antivirus software installed on their computers.

Of course there are plenty of free antivirus solutions on the market today – however all of them have rather limited functionality. Commercial solutions, meanwhile, offer a very different set of choices – the developers are focused on comprehensive products which include a fire wall, anti-spam and anti-phishing filters and other tools over and above basic anti-malware protection. It is precisely these modules, which are seldom seen in free solutions, which provide real security during common user activities – visiting web sites, communicating on social networking sites and performing online financial operations.

Interestingly, 22% of respondents believe that the existence of free antivirus software is the result of the developer’s social responsibility, i.e. the vendors care about those users who for personal or financial reasons cannot pay for the antivirus protection. 31% of the surveyed believe that free software is kind of platform that developers use to promote their top-level commercial products.

During the survey the O+K Research specialists also tried to determine how often the respondents used preinstalled protection software. It turned out that 60% of surveyed got a trial version of an anti-virus program along with their computer or laptop. 13% of them continued using the preinstalled solution after the trial period was over while 30% of the users eventually switched to another solution. Interestingly, 2% of respondents took no steps after the trial period was over and left their computers unprotected.

The cost of the most effective security solutions, such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, is relatively small. In addition, commercial software developers offer a number of money-saving deals. Paid-for solutions surpass their free counterparts both in quality (which is confirmed by independent tests) and functionality. The ever-increasing number of threats makes it necessary to provide reliable multilevel protection to the user’s most important data, and that requires the use of complex technologies such as Kaspersky Lab’s Safe Money system, developed to protect online payments.

Kathea announces Polycom’s co-development initiative with IBM Research to deliver secure, next-generation innovations

Co-development effort to leverage Polycom RealPresence video solutions and IBM Research in cloud and virtualisation technologies

Kathea has announced an initiative between Polycom, a specialist in open standards-based unified communications (UC) and IBM Research to co-develop next-generation innovations that are designed to further accelerate cloud-delivered video collaboration applications to support key vertical and social uses. Under the initiative, Polycom will work with IBM Research to explore and develop technologies that leverage the Polycom RealPresence Platform and real-time video capabilities in the cloud, as businesses are increasingly evaluating Video-as-a-Service (VaaS) offerings through private, public and hybrid cloud models.

Polycom and IBM Research are working to ensure Polycom RealPresence video solutions perform optimally in the most rigorous cloud environments to provide the highest levels of security, performance, and reliability, even when systems need to rapidly scale up and down. The companies plan to further develop interoperability between standard and non-standard video environments, including social video applications, to serve organisations requiring face-to-face video meetings regardless of network, platforms, devices, or protocols. This initiative will put special emphasis toward video-enabled mobile social collaboration. BlackBerry Academic Program launches in Nigeria

Yaba College of Technology joins global BlackBerry education program, supporting young mobile developers in Nigeria

BlackBerry Celebrates Lagos Fashion and Design Week with the Exclusive Style House Files App

New mobile app puts the very best of Lagos Fashion Week and more, in the hands of style-savvy BlackBerry ‘fashionistas’ 

Research in Motion (RIM), the company behind the BlackBerry® solution, has launched an exclusive mobile application that’s all about fashion for the fabulous in Nigeria. The Style House Files (SHF) application for BlackBerry smartphones, which is free to download on the BlackBerry App World™ storefront, is launching today ahead of Lagos Fashion and Design Week, where BlackBerry is the official technology partner.

Created by Lagos developer, Victor Dibia, in collaboration with BlackBerry and event organisers, The Style House Files, the app will bring the very best of Lagos Fashion Week to BlackBerry customers.  Up-to-the-minute reports and imagery from the show are supported by schedules and venue guides, while online discussion forums mean fashionistas can express their thoughts on the latest collections.
