Absa In-Store Banking transactions exceed R8 Million

By admin, 27 września, 2012, No Comment

In excess of R8 million worth of transactions were recorded since the launch of Absa’s In-store banking facility, a clear sign that the payment medium has gained traction in promoting financial inclusion.

Since launching its In-store banking facility in 2011, Financial Services group, Absa, has seen over R8 million in transactions recorded over point-of-sale devices at several of its existing merchant retail stores.

This is according to Arrie Rautenbach, Absa Head of Retail Markets who adds that In-store banking has processed more than 50 000 transactions since January 2012.

Driven by the quest to provide comprehensive banking services outside of the bank’s traditional branches, Absa’s In-store banking facility affords Absa customers the ability to transact at selected merchant retail stores, to withdraw from or deposit money into their accounts, purchase air-time, obtain mini-statements and check balances at point-of-sale machines.

The innovation has been identified by Absa as a key tool to achieve the goal of financial inclusion through branchless banking, while creating foot-flow and additional revenue streams for retailers.

“As the leading Bank in South Africa, Absa not only endeavours to be at the cutting edge in terms of providing financial services, but we are also cognisant of our broader responsibility in facilitating the inclusiveness of the large numbers of previously unbanked and under-banked South Africans,” says Rautenbach.

He adds: “This channel has brought about obvious payment convenience to our customers who are now able to perform basic banking transactions at their local shop at reduced rates. Reaching the R8 million transactional benchmark is reflective of the facility’s success in providing easier and cheaper options that will contribute towards bringing this sector of the market into formal banking.”

As of the end of August 2012, there had already been more than a thousand Absa In-store banking facilities deployed across South Africa. The service was enhanced to offer new functionality over and above normal purchases to include basic banking transactions.

“By capitalising on our extensive retail footprint, we were able to extend our In-store banking facility to many of our existing retailers countrywide, thereby ensuring maximum reach and accessibility to a larger customer base. We aim to attract a large percentage of the unbanked and under-banked market, while expanding the scope of transactional platforms for our existing customers,” says Rautenbach.

Absa has also revolutionised the way financial services reach unbanked and under-banked populations. Since the inception of the bank’s Remote Account Opening Application over 40 000 accounts have been opened making banking more accessible, especially to those who previously had no access to banking.

Absa currently holds the largest number of cellphone banking customers with approximately 3,9 million registered users. The bank maintains its position as the largest retail bank in South Africa in terms of customer numbers, with a growing base of seven million entry level clients.

“These numbers underscore the importance of the work Absa is doing in developing access to formal financial services to a large unbanked population, spread across the country. Our milestones provide for a bright future in making affordable banking accessible to all,” concludes Rautenbach.

Kaspersky Lab’s number of the week: 69% of users prefer not to pay to keep their data safe

By admin, 27 września, 2012, No Comment

Most PC and laptop owners want to keep their digital data safe and sound – in the modern world losing this information means losing a part of one’s personal identity. In fact, figures from a survey conducted for Kaspersky Lab by O+K research in May 2012 confirm just how important security is. According to the survey, 95% of desktop computers and 92% of laptop worldwide are protected from malware and other threats in one way or another. The question is how effective these security solutions are– and therein lies the problem. According to the survey, 69% of users did not pay for the antivirus software installed on their computers.

Of course there are plenty of free antivirus solutions on the market today – however all of them have rather limited functionality. Commercial solutions, meanwhile, offer a very different set of choices – the developers are focused on comprehensive products which include a fire wall, anti-spam and anti-phishing filters and other tools over and above basic anti-malware protection. It is precisely these modules, which are seldom seen in free solutions, which provide real security during common user activities – visiting web sites, communicating on social networking sites and performing online financial operations.

Interestingly, 22% of respondents believe that the existence of free antivirus software is the result of the developer’s social responsibility, i.e. the vendors care about those users who for personal or financial reasons cannot pay for the antivirus protection. 31% of the surveyed believe that free software is kind of platform that developers use to promote their top-level commercial products.

During the survey the O+K Research specialists also tried to determine how often the respondents used preinstalled protection software. It turned out that 60% of surveyed got a trial version of an anti-virus program along with their computer or laptop. 13% of them continued using the preinstalled solution after the trial period was over while 30% of the users eventually switched to another solution. Interestingly, 2% of respondents took no steps after the trial period was over and left their computers unprotected.

The cost of the most effective security solutions, such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, is relatively small. In addition, commercial software developers offer a number of money-saving deals. Paid-for solutions surpass their free counterparts both in quality (which is confirmed by independent tests) and functionality. The ever-increasing number of threats makes it necessary to provide reliable multilevel protection to the user’s most important data, and that requires the use of complex technologies such as Kaspersky Lab’s Safe Money system, developed to protect online payments.

Co-development effort to leverage Polycom RealPresence video solutions and IBM Research in cloud and virtualisation technologies

Kathea has announced an initiative between Polycom, a specialist in open standards-based unified communications (UC) and IBM Research to co-develop next-generation innovations that are designed to further accelerate cloud-delivered video collaboration applications to support key vertical and social uses. Under the initiative, Polycom will work with IBM Research to explore and develop technologies that leverage the Polycom RealPresence Platform and real-time video capabilities in the cloud, as businesses are increasingly evaluating Video-as-a-Service (VaaS) offerings through private, public and hybrid cloud models.

Polycom and IBM Research are working to ensure Polycom RealPresence video solutions perform optimally in the most rigorous cloud environments to provide the highest levels of security, performance, and reliability, even when systems need to rapidly scale up and down. The companies plan to further develop interoperability between standard and non-standard video environments, including social video applications, to serve organisations requiring face-to-face video meetings regardless of network, platforms, devices, or protocols. This initiative will put special emphasis toward video-enabled mobile social collaboration. The two companies have already worked on a number of initiatives to integrate video, mobile, and social platforms.

“As cloud gains traction in the local market, it vital for us at Kathea, a distributor of visual communications solutions, to ensure our customers have access to technology that is geared towards hosted services that make use of the cloud platform.  Polycom’s technology initiative with IBM reinforces the vendor’s efforts and focus on innovation to deliver technology that is geared towards current and future trends such as VaaS and social media integration and collaboration, says Divesh Nathoo, Pre-Sales Manager at Kathea.

Leveraging their development efforts, Polycom and IBM Research plan to create industry solutions that focus on cloud-delivered Communications Enabling Business Processes (CEBP – business activities achieved more effectively through certain communications applications). The combination of leveraging rich presence as well as advanced routing and interoperability creates new possibilities in various industry segments such as insurance, callcentres, surveillance, and more. This initiative is designed to broaden the use of RealPresence video solutions and is an important testimony to Polycom’s focus on driving video ubiquity.

“At its heart, this collaboration with IBM is about laying the foundation for more RealPresence innovation in the cloud. Working with IBM, we’re taking a world-class solution and co-developing technologies to help customers – who are increasingly looking to the cloud for video collaboration applications – better communicate, collaborate, and be more productive,” said Sudhakar Ramakrishna, President of Products and Services, Polycom. “Customers who choose Polycom will always be at the forefront of the industry because we’re pushing the boundaries of collaboration forward to ensure our customers have the best solutions, both today and in the future. Our work with IBM is yet another step forward in achieving Polycom’s goal of connecting anyone across any environment on any device.”

“Together with Polycom, we can help customers prepare for the future of this industry, whether they choose premises-based video solutions or private, public, or hybrid cloud delivery models,” said Ken King, vice president of business development for IBM Research. “Ultimately, it’s about helping Polycom develop new, innovative video products on a cloud computing platform that creates solutions across various industry verticals. By co-developing with Polycom, we can help customers collaborate and make decisions more quickly.”

The co-developed solutions will be rolled-out in future Polycom RealPresence video collaboration solutions, including for enterprises interested in private or hybrid clouds or through service providers who will deliver VaaS offerings through public clouds to businesses of all sizes.

This announcement builds on the existing Polycom and IBM global partnership which includes product integrations as well as offerings that help customers to deliver, install, integrate, and maintain standards-based Polycom video solutions into unified communications environments. Metalogix Software, a trusted provider of content lifecycle management solutions for Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange and Cloud platforms, announced Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint 5.0 was named a KMWorld “Trend-Setting Product” for 2012. Replicator for SharePoint was selected from more than 700 products that were assessed by KMWorld’s judging panel of editorial colleagues, analysts, system integrators, vendors themselves, line-of-business managers and users.

“Each company whose product made the list of Trend-Setting Products in 2012 helped to define and enhance a market critically important to our readership by listening to and working with customers,” said Hugh McKellar, Editor in Chief, KMWorld Magazine. “Metalogix represented this commitment to innovation and their customers with the release of Replicator for SharePoint 5.0 and it is why they deserve inclusion on this prestigious list.”

LG to change market dynamics with Optimus G

By admin, 27 września, 2012, No Comment

Today LG announced the launch of the Optimus G in South Africa. A new premium flagship device offering a unique User Experience (UX) supported by innovative hardware performance. The powerful hardware included in the Optimus G allows for the possibility of such a creative and engaging UX which will enable Optimus G users to “live without boundaries.”

With the powerful quad-core CPU, Snapdragon™ S4 Pro processor and industry best technologies for enhanced viewing and longer battery life, LG adds the finishing touches on the Optimus G with a beautiful sleek design and innovative UX features. The offerings in the Optimus G will provide users an experience currently unavailable on any other smartphone.

“The Optimus G is a groundbreaking premium device not only in the history of LG but also in the smartphone industry,” said ST Kim, product manager at LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “With the Optimus G, users will be able to experience unsurpassed UX features that will allow them to perform tasks that really enhance their daily lives.”

New Form of Cross-Tasking and Engaging UX

With reliable and speedy performance, LG’s Optimus G doesn’t solely enable multi-tasking but “cross-tasking” of activities without limitations. If multi-tasking applies to running various applications at the same time, cross-tasking applies to complex tasks that can be completed simultaneously without having to compromise other tasks.

Some new UX features that will be included into the Optimus G to showcase its cross-tasking and engaging capabilities are:

  • QSlide Function shows two different screens simultaneously on one display. As it doesn’t just show a part of the screen but the entire screen of both functions, the user can complete two tasks concurrently – such as sending a text message or searching the web while watching a video;
  • Live Zooming enhances the video-watching experience as users can zoom in up to five times while the video is being streamed for a close-up of one’s child while watching a recorded video from a school recital;
  • Dual Screen Dual Play not only allows mirroring between the smartphone and a TV, it also has the ability to display different content on each screen wirelessly. For example, a slide presentation can be displayed on the TV while the Optimus G shows the accompanying speaking notes;
  • QuickMemo allows users to write, draw, or jot a memo with their finger directly on the captured screen for sharing instantly with others as an attachment or a URL. The QuickMemo can also be used as an overlay feature – like jotting down a number using the QuickMemo and directly dialling the number while the number is on the top layer;
  • Screen Zooming allows for the zooming in and out of lists in music player, email, text messages and photo gallery. It also offers the ability to change the font size and screen layout;
  • Application Link launches preset applications (email, calendar, weather, etc.) when the alarm is turned off – making preparation time in the morning go a little faster with all the information on your screen;
  • Icon Personaliser allows users the ability to customise icons by editing size and adding images so the most frequently used apps can be most easily accessible.

In addition, smart and fun camera features in Optimus G will allow for capturing and seizing those special moments in our lives. Utilising the industry’s highest resolution camera at 8MP, users will have the opportunity to capture their favourite scenes with:

  • Smart Shutter senses camera vibration or the movement of the subject and adjusts the shutter speed for the best shot;
  • Time Catch Shot enables the user to choose the best among various shots taken before the shutter button is pressed;
  • Cheese Shutter takes photos easily with voice activation command just by saying cheese, kimchi, smile or even LG;
  • Low Light Shot Noise Reduction employs a light monitoring system and activates when the camera is used in a low-light situation for the least amount of noise.

Design Masterpiece with Timeless Value

Inheriting LG’s design DNA and heritage, the blend of delicate design and technology placed the emphasis on simplicity with a completely black unibody form in the Optimus G. For this unique look, LG developed and patented the Crystal Reflection finish, which is applied to the back of the Optimus G for a luxurious look and feel. Crystal Reflection gives the Optimus G’s back cover the ability to display different patterns depending on the viewing angle and lighting. Also, the intricate polarised pattern, which sparkles under the sleek surface, creates a three-dimensional illusion that is eye-catching and exquisitely reminiscent of a jewel. And finally, laser cutting gives the Optimus G a clean finish with metallic highlights.

Unparalleled Technologies for Ultimate UX

The elegant yet sleek design and the imaginative UX experience displayed in the new Optimus G were possible thanks to a collection of technologies from industry-leading developers in their field.

As the first quad-core smartphone with LTE connectivity capabilities, Optimus G complements the enhanced UX features with unsurpassed speed and power from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon™ S4 Pro Quad-Core CPU processor. The state-of-the-art display technologies such as the Zerogap Touch and True HD IPS+ Display from LG Innotek and LG Display harmonise to offer the slimmest, sharpest and clearest viewing experience yet. It also displays a 4.7-inch WXGA True HD IPS+ (120×768 pixels) 15:9 ratio.

The new battery from LG Chem has a longer life of 800 cycles, a significant improvement over existing mobile phone batteries. A high-resolution, compact 8MP camera is employed in the Optimus G to offer the sharpest photos without pixilation – even when creating extra-large prints.

LG Optimus G will go on sale in South Africa in February 2013.

The next BlackBerry 10 developer presentation is being held at the AppGig event at NigeriaCom on Thursday 27th September at the Eko Hotel & Suite, Kuramo Waters, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Nigerian developers are already successfully creating local apps and content on the BlackBerry platform, which are available on BlackBerry App World™. These include the Nigerian Constitution App, by Pledge51 for access to important constitutional information, SeeAm, to find the location of all ATMs throughout Nigeria and the EssentialApp, a free-to-download BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) integrated  app that provides a useful guide for entertainment and day-to-day life in Nigeria. Simplify your Life with Energizer’s Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers

By admin, 27 września, 2012, No Comment

Energizer, global leader in portable power, has upgraded their recharge range with a complete line of long-lasting, rechargeable batteries and chargers in dynamic new packaging for power-demand products.

Energizer Rechargeable Batteries

This core range has been designed to meet specific needs of the three major market segments. Where do you fit in?

“COOL DAD”. This is also perfect for the cool Mum who, like the male of the species, is always curious about what’s new on the market and also offers great value for money, but still goes for trusted brands. If you need a battery that can be recharged hundreds of times – specially to keep the kids’ toys on the go – you have found your niche.

“IN A HURRY’. If you’re always on the move – rushing, rushing, rushing – looking for a quick-charge battery that  combines convenience and long life with speed to keep the fun going, going, going, you’ll be right at home with this group. Oh – and the battery will hold the charge because you don’t have time to recharge more than two or three times a month.

“TECHIE”. Are you intensely interested in all the latest technology, demanding knowledge of specific features and performance details, and to have all your hi-tech gadgets powered at all times? Then you are definitely a ‘techie’ who doesn’t want to waste time recharging more than once a month.

So what has Energizer got for you in the new core AA & AAA recharge range?

The two types of product segments in the Energizer rechargeable battery range to meet the characteristics we’ve just described are all pre-charged and ready to use, straight out of the package. They also boast the unified characteristic of holding their charge for up to one year – and hold its charge when not in use.

ENERGIZER RECHARGE UNIVERSAL. The batteries serve a wide range of devices, are ready to use and hold a charge for up to one year.

ENERGIZER RECHARGE EXTREME. The ultimate battery type for the demanding Techie whose hi-tech devices need maximum power. Furthermore Recharge Extreme batteries last up to six times longer.

When next you are looking for a new recharge battery think of the 3Cs – and think Energizer:
