DreamWorks Studios Picks up Need for Speed from EA

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

George Gatins Wrote Adaptation of Top-Selling Video Game Franchise

DreamWorks Studios has acquired the feature film rights to EA’s (NASDAQ: EA) popular video game franchise, Need for Speed™, it was announced jointly today by DreamWorks CEO and Co-Chair Stacey Snider and EA President of Studios Frank Gibeau.

Brothers George and John Gatins developed the original story with George writing the feature’s screenplay. The screenplay is based on the Need for Speed series, but is not based on an individual game. EA will produce along with John Gatins and Mark Sourian. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) is attached to direct, and the project will be fast-tracked at DreamWorks with a target production start date for early next year, for a 2014 release.

The film adaptation will be a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise. In Need for Speed, the cars are hot, the racing is intense and the story keeps players at the edge of their seat.

“I’m excited about getting back into the creative trenches with John and George Gatins and my partners at EA to bring to life an exhilarating script based on an epic video game that seems to have been made for the movies,” said Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Chairman. “This is a big piece of business for DreamWorks and we are grateful to Frank Gibeau, Pat O’Brien, Kevin Maher and John and George for choosing us to deliver their goods.”

“George, John and EA brought a very compelling story to us which we believe is going to make a fun, cool movie franchise,” said Stacey Snider, CEO and Co-Chair of DreamWorks. “With such a large following around the globe, we’re excited to make a film that does justice to the popular underlying video game series.”

“We are thrilled to be in business with our friends Steven Spielberg, Stacey Snider and the entire DreamWorks team,” said Frank Gibeau, President of EA Labels. “They are the perfect partner to take Need for Speed to the big screen by creating the exciting action film that we have always envisioned.”

“It’s fantastic to be working with a team that shares not only our love of cars, but also our passion for creating blockbuster action experiences. This collaboration will be greatly enhanced with the team at DreamWorks — which is a great home for the Need for Speed franchise,” said Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President, EA Games Label. Added Pat O’Brien, Vice President of EA Entertainment: “Working with John and George to develop the script has truly been an outstanding experience.”

Need for Speed is the premier racing game in the video game industry and one of EA’s best-selling video game franchises. Since the release of the first title, the series has sold more than 140 million units worldwide, generating an estimated $4 billion in retail revenue, making it one of the biggest franchises in video gaming.

Need for Speed serves as a reunion with both George Gatins and John Gatins with DreamWorks. George was an executive producer on the studio’s 2010 film “She’s Out of My League.” John’s previous projects with DreamWorks include the 2005 film “Dreamer” which he wrote and directed. He also wrote the script for last year’s “Real Steel” and has been working on the script for its sequel. He recently wrote the script for “Flight” which will be released by Paramount later this year.

Both EA and John and George Gatins are represented by UTA, who negotiated the deal.

Need for Speed Most Wanted will be available November 2, 2012 in South Africa for the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation3 computer entertainment system, PlayStationVita handheld entertainment system, PC, iOS and Android™.  This product has not yet been rated by the FPB (Film and Publications Board) in South Africa.

Bytes comes out top in NetApp’s prestigious EMEA Awards

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

In testament to Bytes Systems Integration’s longstanding commitment to its partnership with NetApp, the company recently scooped a prestigious award at the NetApp EMEA Partner Summit, held in the Netherlands. The NetApp Top Contributing Partner to Midsize enterprises (MSE) in EMEA was one of just four awards handed out at the summit, and the win in this category clearly demonstrated the strengths of the Bytes team.

The award is a particularly prestigious one, encompassing as it does partners from throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Mike Broderick, who accepted the award on behalf of Bytes, says that it reinforces the commitment the company has made to NetApp and that the results Bytes has achieved reflect the return on this investment.

“At Bytes, we took the decision to focus our data management and data storage offerings on the NetApp Suite of solutions, therefore we will always lead with a NetApp solution. Adherence to this focus allows us to specialise and we are justifiably proud of the high level of expertise and professionalism we have garnered as a result. This award simply affirms that we have made the right decision and we sincerely thank NetApp for recognising this,” he says.

Broderick adds that he commends the entire Bytes team for its commitment and efforts to grow the NetApp business in the MSE segment as well as the enterprise space. This, he suggests, goes for the teams efforts in South Africa, Africa and beyond.

“Bytes are well advanced to progress from NetApp’s Platinum partner status to the very prestigious Star Partner status – this is something we hope to achieve within the next 18 months. At present, there are only a handful of Star Partners globally, so the barrier for entry is extremely high, but Bytes is confident in its ability to achieve this.”

Broderick explains that this partner status can only be achieved if Bytes’ customers continue to trust the company with their data management. He adds that Bytes wants to assure all its existing and prospective customers that the company will continue to invest in this business, with a focus on continuously making it better.

“We believe that NetApp is doing everything right at the moment and will keep doing so for the foreseeable future. Our view is that it is due to the intuitive way the company is delivering solutions for today’s problems; it all boils down to innovation. We are simply delighted to be part of this and also to be part of the whole new range of solutions that have just been announced – it keeps us exactly where we like to be: a step ahead of the competition,” concludes Broderick.

Digital Depot expands

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

Digital Depot, believed to be the first online electronics store catering to the film and media industry, has announced it is expanding its product range to include the requirements of the “full digital arts spectrum”.

This is according to Ashleigh Martyn, sales and marketing manager at Digital Depot, who said that “following the success of supplying products and services to the film and photography industry”, the company would now cover what she termed the “full digital arts spectrum” with products such as Adobe Software, Wacom, GoPro, CorelDraw and various new Thunderbolt devices, now coming online.

These newly-introduced products complement existing ranges that include G-Tech, LaCie, Apple Computers , Sonnet,Black Magic Design, Netstor and ATTO.

“One of our key focuses has been the film and photography industry. But we are now expanding further  – into the design and animation markets – after positive feedback from these market sectors.”

The company has also been successfully selling Apple computers – popular among the film, photography and design industries – and is looking at becoming a reseller of Apple’s

popular iPad range. Digital Depot opened its first retail outlet in Cape Town in March, allowing customers to participate in in-store demonstrations and get a better understanding of new

technologies and workflows available. The company said it will maintain Digital Depot’s online presence, viewing the retail shop as extensions of what it offers the marketplace.

The company also has a technical team providing consulting services, including on-site installations, to ensure that the company can tailor solutions to the particular needs of its clients.

One needs to scratch under the surface of Microsoft’s launch of the Surface tablet – The Notebook Company

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

Microsoft’s announcement that it is to launch its Surface tablet shows the extent of the behemoth’s concerns as it struggles to get back to the top of the totem pole that was arguably usurped by the likes of Google and Apple.

The company’s decision to launch its own tablet – the Surface – and to effectively compete against hardware companies it has worked with on a partnership basis for 30 years, opens “a veritable Pandora’s box of potential reactions”, said Christopher Riley, MD of Laptop and accessories retailer, The Notebook Company – which manages the and online retail sites.

“One gets the feeling that Microsoft has its back to the wall. Taking over the hardware development itself is contrary to its traditional, long-standing modus operandi and is going to step on the toes of its hardware partners – who now effectively become competitors. Whether or not the Microsoft Surface tablet – as a very late entrant into the market – can make any useful inroads against Apple and its iPad dominance is a moot point – as is the side-affects of such a course of action decided upon by Microsoft. It could have the affect of creating a massive financial backlash as hardware companies eschew Microsoft for other operating systems. This might seem highly unlikely – certainly en masse – but there might well be repercussions. Microsoft is playing in a field it never played in before. Alliances are being upset –all the playing cards are being upset.”

It must also be remembered, said Riley, that apart from the successful – but still unprofitable – Xbox games console, Microsoft has not delivered much success when it comes to making hardware, especially if one considers its earlier ventures into the tablet market. The first was in 2001 when it entered the market – too soon – with its own tablet PC and then, again, with its attempt to launch the Courier two years ago. At the end of the day, the Courier was never launched.

“But Microsoft has naturally recognized the massive importance of the tablet market and its decision to move into this burgeoning market with a vengeance does not go unnoticed. The company arguably had no choice. But market watchers will be wondering which way this will play out – will it result in Microsoft wrestling part of the tablet market away from Apple’s dominance – at the same time creating more momentum for its Windows 8 strategy – or will it result in an overall backlash from the market as Microsoft muscles its way in to restore its earlier market dominance.”

Commenting further, Riley said it must be recognized that launching a tablet is critical to its new Windows 8 strategy because, for the first time, Microsoft has made an operating system designed for both the desktop – running Intel-specified processors – and their new tablets (which will use a different processor design called ARM).

Microsoft detractors may caution against this latest step, but they need to be aware that Microsoft still has serious firepower – and is still the largest software developer in the world. This latest move might just end up reaping huge rewards for the company in the greater scheme of things. But my suspicion is that it will be to the contrary.”

Samsung kicks off on-site activation for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd, a global leader in consumer electronics and a Presenting Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, recently revealed its Olympic Torch Relay programme that kicked off internationally in May 2012.  The African leg of the relay is set to take place in just under a week’s time. Samsung has a legion of inspirational international Olympic Torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame around the UK during its 70-day relay. Samsung will bring the excitement to towns and villages across the UK through the Samsung Caravan and 20-minutes of stage performances at the evening celebrations, offering new inspiring opportunities for everyone to experience and take part in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Samsung’s torchbearer search

During 2011, Samsung launched a six-month global search for Torchbearers who had demonstrated how they had ‘gone the extra mile’. Nominations were received from 58 countries around the world, enabling Samsung’s London 2012 campaign to deliver the most inclusive Olympic Games ever – Olympic Games for Everyone. Every Torchbearer has been carefully selected for their unique contribution to local communities and their demonstration of the Olympic spirit.

London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers will have their experience further enriched by the involvement of an array of celebrity Torchbearers including, nine-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist John Legend. Legend is well-known for his work to break the cycle of poverty and improve educational opportunities for all kids though his ‘Show Me’ Campaign.

Samsung gives back to inspirational people

Commenting on his Torchbearer invitation, Legend said, “This will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me and I’m looking forward to meeting some of the amazing people from all walks of life that Samsung has invited to take part.”

Samsung has selected a number of globally recognised Torchbearers who are known for their continuous inspiration to others. British TV star and campaigner Jamie Oliver, Ivory Coast and Chelsea footballer Didier Drogba and Vladimir Tolstoy, the essayist and great grandson of Leo Tolstoy, will all join Legend in carrying the Olympic Flame.

Didier Drogba, a star striker for Chelsea FC, with which Samsung has partnered since 2005, was nominated to become an Olympic Torchbearer in recognition of his continuous efforts to improve health and education services for children in Africa through the Didier Drogba Foundation. A passionate supporter of free sporting activities for underprivileged youngsters in London, Didier Drogba commented: “It is a great honour to be recognised for the work I do off the pitch; in local London communities or campaigning to improve the lives of children in Africa. It has always been my goal to change things for the better. The Olympic Torch Relay celebrates just a handful of the many extraordinary people that regularly put others’ needs before their own and this is what I will be celebrating.”

The Olympic Torch is the emotional symbol of the Olympic Games which marks the beginning and the end of the Olympic Games.  It also presents an opportunity to general public to take part in the Olympic Games by offering them a chance to carry the Olympic Flame. Since Athens 2004, Samsung has sponsored the Olympic Torch Relay in two Youth Olympic Games and three Olympic Games, and is now entirely committed to delivering its sixth Olympic Torch for London 2012 to share the Olympic Spirit with everyone across the world.  The Samsung Caravan will travel with Torchbearers around the UK during the 70-day relay. An interactive LED screen built into the side of the Caravan will feature Olympic Torch Relay highlights as well as avatars of participants for Samsung Hope Relay, a virtual Olympic Torch Relay that allows everyone to take part. The caravan is designed to cheer up everyone to celebrate the Torch Relay with music and interaction with local communities such as by distributing Olympic keepsakes to crowds.

Providing the Olympic Games for everyone

To welcome the Olympic Flame and to celebrate the combined efforts of all its Torchbearers, Samsung joined the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and the host Local Authority to stage an evening celebration event, which showcased a series of exciting shows featuring groups such as ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ dance group Diversity who were prepped to thrill the crowds. Topping the bill was the brand new Samsung GALAXY S III – Samsung’s Olympic Games phone for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Spectators were able to visit the Samsung Mobile Trailer to enjoy an immersive entertainment experience and to explore the world’s most advanced smartphone, the GALAXY S III, before it was released to market.

Sunny Hwang, Vice President and Head of Global Sports Marketing, Samsung Electronics, said; “Our aim is for London 2012 to be an Olympic Games for everyone. Our worldwide campaign to find deserving people to carry the Olympic Flame has offered people across the world a once-in-lifetime opportunity to be involved in this amazing event. We have also prepared a variety of entertaining elements to build the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay for communities along the route. We are looking forward to this momentous journey.”

Samsung empowers people across the world

Says Michelle Potgieter, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Samsung South Africa; “In South Africa we have selected a number of local representatives to carry the torch for the African leg of the relay and to represent both South Africa and Samsung in the empowering of people for world peace and unity. Through our local campaign we identified a number of individuals who have made a difference in our communities. We will also be taking a media contingency, individuals selected through our mobile division and those selected from our online competition.

“The African leg of the relay will take place from 29 June to 02 July in Birmingham – whereby Samsung South Africa will be hosting and supporting these individuals as they carry the torch for our country. We look forward to this exciting leg of the event and are sure that the impact these people have had on others’ lives within our communities will be returned in favour through this prestigious event,” continues Potgieter.

“As one of the three Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, Samsung will play a key role in delivering the excitement through its smart technology and enabling everyone around the world to take part in the historic moment,” concludes Potgieter.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay began its 70 day journey around the UK on Saturday May 19th taking in many of the UK’s cultural landmarks. Visiting over 1,000 cities, towns and villages along its 8,000 mile route, the Olympic Flame aims to inspire the UK with spirit of the Olympic Games and marks the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games prior to its celebrated arrival at the Olympic Stadium on July 27th. Samsung encourages everyone to celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay and to make London 2012 ‘Everyone’s Olympic Games’ by creating inspiring and memorable experiences for everyone around the world.

Cloud is safe – and here to stay, says Intel

By admin, 26 czerwca, 2012, No Comment

Confused about cloud computing? Wondering how – and if – you should use it? Chances are, you’ve been using it for years already – and the good news is that it’s no more or less secure than your current computing set-up, says Intel’s Greg Cline.

“Storing your stuff in the cloud is nothing new. In fact, we’ve been doing it for years: we’ve just been calling it webmail and Facebook,” said Cline. “The Internet not only gave us access to any information under the sun, but also rang in a new era for how we access and store data. The bottom line is that there is no turning back to a world pre-Internet and pre-cloud.”

But while the average person on the street does not think twice about sharing details of their everyday lives on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, many small businesses are still hesitant about embracing this concept. Nine times out of ten, the concern here is around security and the unknown.

“The digitalisation of our lives is exploding,” says Cline.” Music downloads are surpassing CD sales. E-books went from a novelty to a billion-dollar market in a flash. Streaming video is becoming the preferred way to watch movies and television. Consumers are doing away with physical libraries filled with photo albums, DVDs, CDs and books in their homes, so shouldn’t business follow suit?”

Storing data, and accessing applications, from the cloud provides the perfect opportunity for businesses of all sizes to re-architect their technology approach and infrastructure says Cline. “And now that employees of all levels are demanding that they be able to use their personal devices in the workplace, the cloud is a phenomenon that technology decision-makers in companies cannot ignore.”

But is it safe? Keeping data secure will always be a contentious issue for people, both in their personal and business capacities. Cline believes securing the cloud is no different from securing the rest of your IT infrastructure: “If your organisation does not have clear security policies today, then that is your first step. You should not be re-inventing any security wheels, but rather make sure that current security practices or the best-practices of a cloud provider is up to standard. Behind every cloud is a network and data center that needs to operate within the same security principles and mandates that your network does for on-premise consumption.”

“In the end, businesses need to decide up-front if the risk of moving sensitive data and applications to an emerging infrastructure like the cloud is too much. All I know is cloud computing is a rapidly evolving landscape – one that requires us to stay current or fall behind.”
