Software AG and Kneipp Group achieve a strategic milestone in process-driven IT transformation

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

Software AG and the Kneipp Group have reached the next milestone in their long-term collaboration on a strategic project for implementing process-driven IT transformation. The Product Launch segment of Kneipp’s main business processes that was modeled using ARIS has been migrated into webMethods Suite, Software AG’s product line for business process management, and is now automated. ARIS is a modeling software for business processes from IDS Scheer AG, and Software AG has been working on integrating ARIS und webMethods since acquiring that company last year. Thus the project with the Kneipp Group represents an important milestone in the integration of both product lines.

A company with a long tradition, Kneipp began collaborating with Software AG back in 2006 on a phased transition to become a business process-driven organization. This midsized enterprise aims to improve its agility and competitive performance in the global consumer market with the help of Software AG. Three main business processes modeled with the ARIS platform offer the health products manufacturer transparency and end-to-end business control, from the initial idea for a product throughout its entire lifecycle, from the supply chain through distribution. The first segment of the business process for handling product launches has already been transitioned from the ARIS model to the webMethods suite and is now automated.

“The successful automation of this first process segment was very important for us from a number of different perspectives,” explains Christian Schulze, CIO and member of the executive board at Kneipp. Specifically, it deals with the destruction process, which previously required a great deal of effort because many signatures had to be gathered, reports prepared and value adjustments for all raw materials taken into account. “Now we have the necessary transparency at the push of a button – a complete overview of all costs, status information and the remaining value of a raw material,” noted the CIO. “Thanks to the automation, we are achieving a solid cost savings of 35 percent. And no less valuable is the experience we have gained in ‘thinking in processes,’ which has replaced strictly departmental thinking at Kneipp.” Software AG and Kneipp are currently in the process of implementing the ARIS platform and webMethods scenario for all the main business processes.

“We are very pleased with the success of our transformation project with the Kneipp Group and that our approach to achieving excellent business processes is making a crucial contribution to optimizing the company’s IT infrastructure,” states Dr. Wolfram Jost, Chief Product Officer at Software AG. “Nowadays the quality of business processes plays a key role in the competitiveness of a business. Only lean, flexible processes lead to improved innovation expertise, shorter time-to-market and therefore to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.”

Xiotech ISE Storage Solves VDI Problems

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

Xiotech Corporation, the leader in Intelligent Application Storage, has announced a set of new products that take the power of the company’s Intelligent Storage Element (ISE™) storage systems and tailor it for the internal enterprise service provider. The solution set includes the Emprise™ 9000 storage system, built on ISE technology, as well as ISE Manager software and ISE Analyzer software. Together, these solutions optimize performance-starved applications like VDI and offer service-level functionality, from service assurance to chargeback, across a fully shared data center infrastructure.

Many specialized applications today have their own dedicated storage infrastructures to reduce conflict, increase reliability and provide clear, line-of-sight management. This separation results in higher costs, lower efficiency and increased management complexity. Xiotech’s ISE-based approach drastically changes the planning, deployment, and management equation, including:

  1. Scale out storage – Emprise 9000 storage and controllers can be added anywhere, whether in a rack or distributed across campus. This enables cost-effective, linear scaling from two to 12 controllers and up to 1.8 PB with the reliability and performance that are the hallmarks of ISE-based storage.
  2. Service level management – ISE Manager and ISE Analyzer provide the ability to forecast, provision, manage and measure all aspects of storage performance and utilization across any number of ISE units. ISE Manager enables users to deploy and provision storage as part of an internal storage cloud instead of individual devices, while ISE Analyzer reports, analyses, streamlines and predicts storage performance and capacity.
  3. Application-centric storage control – Emprise 9000 offers flexible control, delivering powerful, controller-based access or direct ISE management access via the CorteX API.

“These new announcements from Xiotech extend the applicability of its underlying ISE architecture as well as improve overall storage management for users,” said Derek Rule, Xiotech Africa Country Manager. “Making the advantages of ISE available in this way is perfect for extending Xiotech’s Intelligent Application Storage approach to support the demands of internal enterprise service providers, especially for applications – such as VDI – where consistent performance and top-notch reliability are crucial.”

VDI Unleashed

The extension of virtualization from servers to desktops holds great promise for IT businesses, yet storage costs are holding back broader adoption due largely to existing performance and reliability inefficiencies. The unique characteristics of ISE-based storage – augmented by the flexibility and granular visibility delivered in the products announced today – make ISE the ideal platform for VDI. Predictable, linear scalability of performance and capacity, 100x reliability with a five-year, zero-touch warranty and the industry’s broadest integration with major virtualization solutions from VMware, Microsoft and Citrix drive tremendous performance and efficiency. Xiotech’s own lab tests and published data on the HP StorageWorks P4000 underscore the gains in comparison to HP, including:

  1. 142 percent increase in storage utilization
  2. 178 percent more VDI users supported
  3. 17 percent fewer drives used

“Xiotech continues to advance our ISE-based storage solutions, making them accessible to a broader range of customers and partners,” said Rule. “We’ve unlocked even greater value from our ISE technology, especially for VDI. Applications simply run better on ISE because of its industry-best balance of performance, capacity, reliability and cost.”

The Next Step in ISE Evolution and Storage Migration

With the introduction of Emprise 9000, ISE Manager and ISE Analyzer, Xiotech has delivered more components and value within its Intelligent Application Storage architecture and provided for greater ease of migration from legacy storage concepts.

The Emprise 9000 is Xiotech’s next generation, scale-out storage controller, delivering to IT a unifying data center platform that offers the highest levels of advanced functionality, deployment/management flexibility and investment protection along with scale-out flexibility up to 12 controllers and 1.8PB. Representing an entirely new control architecture, Emprise 9000 offers the ability to:

  1. Control the Future – Unlike traditional arrays, Emprise 9000 allows advanced applications like VDI direct, high performance control of ISE storage resources – and development of additional apps and automated controls through CorteX. It also allows customers to leverage the functionality they have come to expect in traditional storage array control – snapshots, thin provisioning, replication, cloning, etc. – to keep current applications running optimally.
  2. Protect the Past – Because it is an ISE-based platform, Emprise 9000 can be dropped into an environment with no changes required. Because it can manage and control all ISE within the platform as well as integrate third-party storage, it can optimize data across service-oriented storage tiers and enable seamless, heterogeneous migration when the time is right. Adding further value, Emprise 9000 offers two DataPacs within each ISE that can be mixed and matched.

ISE Manager, the next generation of Xiotech ICON Manager, provides a powerful yet simple management interface for simple, user-friendly storage and server administration that yields efficiencies and cost savings. ISE Manager enables complete storage management in a single internal storage cloud and greatly simplifies provisioning and capacity deployment. Whereas traditional storage provisioning requires a dozen or more steps across the storage system, the server and the virtual or physical machine, ISE Manager allows you to create new volumes with a simple three-click process via Virtual View and extensive support for third-party hypervisors.

Deployed as an appliance, ISE Analyzer provides an intuitive, graphical, browser-based resource manager for analyzing, streamlining and predicting storage capacity. With real-time, granular ISE telemetry data from ISE Manager, ISE Analyzer:

  1. Identifies usage patterns for more efficient storage allocation, leading to greater storage infrastructure yields and efficiencies.
  2. Maps performance to applications, allowing chargeback capabilities and better insight.
  3. Triggers informational alerts when intended changes are predicted to have adverse effects, ensuring stronger and more consistent storage performance.
  4. Tracks historical data, enabling better storage usage analysis and budget forecasts.
  5. Reclaims storage orphaned by dormant virtual machines, saving users more money

WHO uses SA social network MXit and JamiiX to prepare South East Asian communities for disaster management

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

· More than 500 000 people have died in natural disasters in the area over the last decade.

· MXit an accessible, affordable communications tool with a strong Indonesian following.

· JamiiX allows WHO to manage conversations across multiple social media platforms.

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) has teamed up with popular mobile social network MXit and JamiiX to bring emergency preparedness information to chat users in disaster-prone Indonesia.

This new approach is part of WHO’s wider effort to strengthen disaster preparedness in the region and build public awareness of the urgent need for safe hospitals in disaster zones.

Indonesians using MXit chat will be able to access personal preparedness information, including what to do in the case of natural disasters like floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and cyclones; how to prepare an emergency kit and how to plan for possible evacuation. This information is teamed up with facts on safe hospitals in disaster zones and ways to, as an individual, support WHOs drive for safe health facilities.

Over the last decade, more than half a million people in South East Asia have died in devastating floods, cyclones, earthquakes and tsunamis. The day after launching the campaign on MXit – the country experienced three consecutive earthquakes. People living in the region can support the campaign by adding their voice and signing up on MXit to assist WHO to reach its 1 million supporter target. People are also urged to support the campaign through a Facebook reaction tester.

This mobile and social media outreach is novel for WHO. “We are leveraging new communication technology in order to ease the availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of health information and services,” says Dr Roderico Ofrin, regional adviser for WHO’s emergency and humanitarian action. “Through this campaign we will continue to explore innovative means of bringing critical information in times of emergencies,” he says.

Herman Heunis, CEO and founder of MXit says: “The WHO campaign illustrates the value and power of social networking in assisting communities, especially those in disaster prone areas. As climate change and severe weather variations take a hold of many locations around the world, it makes sense to develop ways for communities and countries to receive life-saving information and assistance in a reliable and affordable way. We commend WHO for initiating this important project.”

“Being able to access life saving information at your fingertips is an empowering initiative by WHO and we are excited to be part of this campaign, which displays the power of social media,” says Marlon Parker, CEO of JamiiX and founder of RLabs.

The campaign, launched on 13 October, has been supported by among others actor Jet Li and social media service SlideShare.

Gartner Highlights 10 Critical Myths and Realities of Master Data Management

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

The adoption of master data management (MDM) promises many benefits ranging from business agility and improved business performance to increased revenue and lower IT and business costs. However, according to Gartner, Inc., achieving these benefits often entails overcoming formidable technical, organisational and political hurdles.

Gartner defines MDM as a technology-enabled discipline that ensures the uniformity, accuracy, stewardship and semantic consistency of an enterprise’s official, shared master data assets. Organisations use master data for consistency, simplification, uniformity of process, analysis and communication across the business.

“MDM is the latest attempt to solve the old problem of inconsistent versions of important data at the centre of an organisation,” said Andrew White, research vice president at Gartner. “As with any new initiative, there is a lot of hype and confusion, and with hype and confusion comes misunderstanding. Executive sponsors of MDM and MDM programme managers must avoid several common mistakes that have been known to derail MDM initiatives in the past.”

To clarify some of the confusing and conflicting points of view on MDM, Gartner has highlighted the prevalent myths surrounding MDM alongside an explanation of the realities.

Myth 1: MDM Is About Implementing a Technology

Reality: MDM is much less about technology and much more about understanding how business processes are supposed to work.

Myth 2: MDM Is a Project

Reality: MDM is implemented as a programme that forever changes the way the business creates and manages its master data. However, to adopt MDM will require numerous discrete projects.

Myth 3: We Don’t Need MDM; We Have an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW)

Reality: MDM should/will span the organisation across all business units and processes (including data stores, operational and analytical).

Myth 4: Implementing ERP Means You Don’t Need MDM

Reality: Enterprise resource planning (ERP) generally means a packaged business application strategy, most often centered on a single, large vendor. ERP implied, but rarely realised for the user organisation, a single process and data model across the organisation.

Myth 5: MDM Is for Large, Complex Enterprises Only

Reality: The principle of MDM is applied whenever two or more business processes must view or share (master) data. This means that most organisations have a need for the discipline of MDM even if they don’t call it that, or if they implement a separate technology called MDM.

Myth 6: Metadata Is ‘the’ Key to MDM

Reality: Metadata is critical to MDM (and many efforts outside MDM), but how metadata is applied in the context of MDM differs by domain, industry, use case and implementation style.

Myth 7: MDM Is an IT Effort

Reality: MDM must be driven by the business, a business case, and supported/enabled by IT.

Myth 8: MDM Is Just Too Big to Do

Reality: MDM can be and is most presently being adopted one domain or province at a time, and one use case at a time.

Myth 9: MDM Is Separate to Data Governance and Data Quality

Reality: MDM includes governance (of master data) and data quality (of master data) — MDM cannot be established without them.

Myth 10: It Doesn’t Matter Which MDM Technology Vendor You Use — They All ‘Do’ MDM

Reality: MDM is complex; rarely do two organisations’ MDM programmes look alike. Vendor MDM capability has also focused on specialisation across data domain, industry, use case, organisation and implementation style. Consequently, vendor selection is critical if organisations are to find the right partner.

How to choose the right hosted PBX solution

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

Now is a great time to be in the market for a new PBX, says Vox Orion MD Jacques du Toit. With the arrival of hosted IP PBXs alongside the older hardware-based devices, customers have more choice than ever before.

“Many of our clients are considering a move into IP as their existing PBX infrastructure reaches the end if its lifecycle,” says Du Toit. “Market deregulation, lower bandwidth costs and new technology have made IP telephony a very attractive proposition – but you need to do your homework.”

The very first move companies need to make is to ensure that their internal networks are voice-ready, says Du Toit. “Your LAN cabling needs to be CAT5E+, your network switches preferably need to support power over Ethernet, you need to be able to give voice calls priority over the network (QoS) and you need appropriate security in place.”

The other critical components are end user devices – handsets or soft phones – and the external network links. “You can’t compromise on quality in either case,” says Du Toit. “A cheap handset will lower call quality and lead to bad experiences. If a customer elects to go with soft phones they need to implement tight controls as to what gets changed or loaded on the device”

IP telephony comes in three flavours, each with its own particular costs and benefits: Proprietary, pure open source and commercial open source. “We believe the benefits of proprietary systems are outweighed by their high cost and the fact that they tend to offer very little customizability,” says Du Toit. “On the other hand, pure open source may be free, but there is very limited support. We believe commercial open source solutions combine the best of both worlds: excellent technology at low cost, with all the backup and support that you need for a system that is important for your business.”

Switching to IP telephony will save money in the long run, adds Du Toit, “but that shouldn’t be the primary motivation. Quality is key: If you go with a cheap or free option, you may find yourself making every call twice. That’s frustrating for staff and a very poor show for customers.”

Even more important than cost savings, he says, are the new services made possible by IP telephony. Some options include presence management, Fixed Mobile Convergence, conferencing solutions, access control etc “You may not need video today or next year, for example, but as the cost of broadband is reduced, the demand for video will increase. You need to choose a provider who can terminate voice calls on their own network, and who can continue to offer you new value added services as they become available. Otherwise you may be heading down a dead end.”

Prospective customers should also check that suppliers have redundancy in their platforms and interconnect points, in addition, national representation is critical to ensure calls are terminated in the most cost effective way.

New Twitter Worm Redirects Users

By admin, 26 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions, warns users about a new, fast-moving Twitter worm which exploits Google’s goo.gl service of truncated links.

The truncated URLs are lightweight and popularly used in micro-blogging systems, limiting the length of messages for users of services such as Twitter. However, shortened links can seriously threaten computer security, because the text of a truncated URL is relatively obscure and a user does not know what it contains prior to ending up on an infected site. Hackers are managing to successfully lure the unwary into using their malicious truncated links.

A recently discovered Twitter worm’s redirection chain pushes users to a webpage that delivers a rogue AV called ’Security Shield’. After several redirections, a user is transferred to the page related to the rogue AV distributive. The page uses obfuscation code techniques that include an implementation of RSA cryptography in JavaScript. Kaspersky Lab experts have found thousands of Twitter messages continuing to spread the worm.

Kaspersky Lab malware researcher Nicolas Brulez discovered that once you are on this website, you will receive a warning that your machine is running suspicious applications. The warning invites users to remove all the threats from their computer, and download the ‘Security Shield’ rogue AV application. As usual, the result of downloading the program is that the user’s machine is infected with malicious programs.

All Kaspersky Lab products are capable of detecting this threat via their inbuilt heuristic analyser. However, users should always bear in mind that clicking on random links may lead to severe infection of their machine.

Gartner Executive Programs Worldwide Survey of More Than 2,000 CIOs Identifies Cloud Computing as Top Technology Priority for CIOs in 2011

By admin, 21 stycznia, 2011, No Comment

CIOs must re-imagine IT to support growth and competitive advantage, based on results from the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). CIOs report that their organisations are emphasising growth, in addition to continued vigilance on cost and operational efficiencies. Although EMEA CIOs report similar business priorities, the survey found that efficiency and consolidation are of higher priority in Europe.

The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. The survey includes responses from 2,014 CIOs representing over $160 billion in corporate and public-sector IT spending across 50 countries and 38 industries. The Gartner Executive Programs report “Reimagining IT: The 2011 CIO Agenda” represents the most-comprehensive examination of business priorities and CIO strategies.

CIOs’ IT budget projections for 2011 are globally flat, with an average budget increase of 1 per cent. While CIOs do not report IT budgets returning to their 2008 (pre-recession) levels, the number of those experiencing budget increases in 2011 outnumbered those reporting a cut by almost three-to-one.

EMEA CIOs report an average budget decline of 0.4 per cent in 2011. The UK is one of the hardest hit, reporting an average drop of 6.9 per cent, while German CIOs expect their budgets to decline 2.7 per cent and French CIOs anticipate a 0.2 per cent increase. These budget variations reflect different local macroeconomic and political contexts.

“CIOs and IT have been boxed in between modest budget growth and growing legacy requirements,” said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs. “New lighter-weight technologies – such as cloud computing, software as a service (SaaS), and social networks -and IT models enable the CIO to redefine IT, giving it a greater focus on growth and strategic impact. These are two things that are missing from many organisations.”

“The resource realities indicated in the 2011 CIO Agenda Survey raise the urgency and importance of adopting new infrastructure and operations technologies, such as cloud services and virtualisation,” Mr McDonald said. “These technologies were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011 and are well-suited for this budget reality, as they offer similar service levels at lower budget costs.”

CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Currently, 3 per cent of CIOs have the majority of IT running in the cloud or on SaaS technologies, but over the next four years CIOs expect this number to increase to 43 per cent.

“Social media continues to be an important technology focus, with many EMEA CIOs prioritising it significantly higher than the global average, forming part of their struggle for growth and differentiation,” said Dave Aron, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

In a further positive development revealed in the survey, CIOs may be able to reallocate IT budget savings, rather than simply returning them to the organisation in 2011. CIOs anticipate the ability to fund infrastructure changes and new projects by reallocating resources within that budget. This approach to funding will become a standard operating procedure since Gartner does not see CIO IT budgets recovering to their 2008 peak until 2014.

CIOs report that their organisations are emphasising growth, in addition to continued vigilance on cost and operational efficiencies. This emphasis is consistent with emerging signs of economic recovery and increasing competition to attract and retain customers.

A ranking of business strategies reported by CIOs (see Table 1) indicates that growth is a core expectation for 2011 and beyond. The move to growth appears to be more of a change in emphasis than a restructuring of business strategies and business expectations for IT, as prior top concerns for reducing enterprise costs and improving business processes remain important.

Table 1

Top 10 Business and Technology Priorities in 2011

Source: Gartner EXP (January 2011)

Until recently, the average IT organisation dedicated 66 per cent of its budget to day-to-day operations leaving little room for transformation of business strategy. CIOs see the introduction of internet service-based technologies as changing that equation and releasing between 35 to 50 per cent of infrastructure and operational resources for innovation and growth. This is creating a new CIO success cycle, one based on creating and realising new sources of value, in addition to cost-effective IT operations.

“Over the next five years, CIOs expect dramatic changes in IT as they adopt new technologies and raise their contribution to competitive advantage,” Mr McDonald said. “Leaders will implement new infrastructure technologies to achieve increased efficiency and to redirect IT resources to create greater business impact. Pursuit of that leadership agenda will raise complex issues ranging from re-imaging IT’s role in their organisation to the creative destruction necessary to break old practices and redeploy resources to new initiatives.”

The 2011 CIO Agenda survey included results from more than 100 companies in China. There is some indication that Chinese companies will “leapfrog” some technologies (for example, by moving more-directly to mobility- and services-type models). Gartner said that this means technology companies seeking success in China will grow based on the reach of their channel, rather than expanding with existing customers.
